Caroline Smailes
Graduated 2007
Biography
In September 2005, two weeks before she was due to start a funded PhD in Linguistics, Caroline Smailes saw an interview on Richard & Judy during which someone was referred to as a ‘nearly woman’. She identified with the label – she was a ‘nearly writer.’ Not wanting to be ‘nearly’ anything, she gave up her PhD and enrolled on the MA Creative Writing: Novel programme at MMU. Her first book, completed as part of her studies, was discovered when The Friday Project came across her blog; In Search of Adam was published in July 2007. She has since published a further four novels – Black Boxes, Like Bees to Honey, 99 Reasons Why and The Drowning of Arthur Braxton. She has completed a sixth, The Continuing Story of Martha Lost, with the support of Arts Council England 'Time to Write' funding. She lives in the North West of England with her husband and three children.
