Carol Ann Duffy and the Manchester Writing School at Manchester Metropolitan University present The People’s Poetry Lectures: today’s leading writers talking about their favourite poets.

The first in this new series features Gillian Clarke on Dylan Thomas: “Music and Truth – The Sound and Shape of Carmarthen Bay”.

Gillian Clarke is one of the UK’s most celebrated poets. She was awarded the Queen’s Gold medal for Poetry in 2010 and the Wilfred Owen Award in 2012. She has written for radio, and translated poetry and prose from Welsh. The Gathering/Yr Helfa, written for the National Theatre of Wales, was performed on Snowdon in September 2014. Her collection, Ice, was shortlisted for the TS Eliot Prize in 2012. She was born in Cardiff and lives in Ceredigion, and was National Poet of Wales from 2008 to 2016.

Dylan Thomas (1914-1953) was a Welsh writer whose most recognised works include the poems ‘Do not go gentle into that good night’, ‘And death shall have no dominion’ and the play Under Milk Wood. His 1940s radio broadcasts for the BBC brought him to the public’s attention and established him as a spokesperson for the literary scene. Noted for his rhythmic and ingenious use of language and imagery, Dylan has been acknowledged as one of the most important Welsh poets of the twentieth century.

Join Gillian and Carol Ann in the relaxed setting of Manchester’s iconic Principal Hotel for an informal evening celebrating poetry.
